Ufficio Zero Linux OS

About Ufficio Zero Linux OS

Ufficio Zero Linux OS is a free, open-source desktop operating system aimed at professionals, offices and public administration. It is an Italian project, managed by the company SIITE SRLS and promoted by the association Boost Media APS, and it is offered in several versions based on established Linux distributions, including PCLinuxOS, Linux Mint and Devuan. Its name, which translates roughly as "zero office", reflects its goal of providing a ready-to-use office workstation without licence costs.

The distribution comes with a large selection of applications for professional use, so that a new installation is immediately productive for typical office tasks: documents, spreadsheets and presentations, email, web browsing, PDF handling, graphics, accounting and other business-oriented software. Offering editions based on different parent distributions lets users choose the foundation that best suits their hardware and preferences, for example a Devuan-based edition for those who prefer to avoid systemd, or a Mint-based edition with Ubuntu compatibility.

The project has also created Duplica, a bare-metal restore solution that helps create backups of a whole system and restore them onto a machine, which is useful for offices that need to deploy or recover workstations quickly. Ufficio Zero is trademarked through the Linux Mark Institute, and the community is supported by a website and a forum hosted on the Citiverse platform, where users can ask questions, mostly in Italian.

The download here is a 64-bit desktop ISO of one of the project's editions. Although the listing mentions Windows and macOS, Ufficio Zero is a complete Linux operating system, not an application for those platforms: write the ISO to a USB drive with a tool such as Etcher or Rufus, boot from it to try the live system, then install it if you like it. Since the project and its documentation are Italian-focused, it is particularly well suited to Italian-speaking users and organisations. It is released under the GPL and Creative Commons licences.
