About ImmortalWrt
ImmortalWrt is an open-source fork of OpenWrt, the popular Linux-based operating system for routers and embedded network devices. It keeps OpenWrt's flexible, package-based design while porting more packages, supporting additional devices and shipping default profiles optimised for its users, with localisation aimed particularly at users in mainland China. Like OpenWrt, it replaces a router's stock firmware with a fully configurable Linux system.
With ImmortalWrt installed, a router becomes far more capable than typical factory firmware allows. It provides a web interface based on LuCI for configuring networks, wireless, firewall rules, VPNs, quality of service and more, along with a package manager for installing additional software. The project states that, compared with upstream OpenWrt, it allows modifications and workarounds that would not be accepted upstream, in exchange for better features, performance or hardware support on some devices.
After installation, the project's default login address is http://192.168.1.1 or http://immortalwrt.lan with the username root and no password, so setting a strong password should be the first step. Firmware images are built per device, and you must use the exact image for your hardware model and revision. The files currently listed on this page are source packages and binaries mirrored by the project, such as third-party source tarballs used during firmware builds, rather than ready-to-flash router images; device firmware is available from the project's official download site.
Flashing third-party firmware carries risk: an incorrect image or interrupted flash can leave a device unusable, and it may void the warranty. Read the device-specific instructions and keep a way to recover. ImmortalWrt is developed openly on GitHub under the GPL, alongside OpenWrt's large ecosystem. For enthusiasts who want an OpenWrt-style router with additional packages and device support, ImmortalWrt is a well-known alternative.
